Strong Thunderstorm Brings Risks to Concord Area
This afternoon, the National Weather Service issued a Special Weather Statement for southeastern Catawba, central Iredell, and west central Rowan counties—including Concord, NC. A strong thunderstorm, moving southeast at 25 mph, is forecasted to bring wind gusts up to 40 mph and pea-sized hail. Minor hail damage to outdoor property and gusty winds capable of snapping tree limbs are possible.
With winds like these, unsecured outdoor items and weak tree limbs are especially vulnerable. For homeowners in Concord, even storms with seemingly minor hail and moderate winds can mean trouble for roofs, gutters, and siding.

How Thunderstorms Impact Your Roof
What does a storm like this mean for your home? Even if hail is only the size of peas and wind gusts are below hurricane strength, damage can occur—especially to older or already compromised roofs. Shingles can crack, granules can be knocked loose, and flashing might tear away, all of which open the door to future leaks.
Recognize and Inspect Roof Damage After a Storm
- Look for missing or curled shingles from the ground.
- Check your gutters for an excessive buildup of shingle granules.
- Visually inspect attic ceilings for new water stains or dampness.
- Pay attention to bent or loose flashing around chimneys and vents.
- Scan for debris piles or broken branches that may have struck your roof.
