The alert remains active through at least 7:15 PM EDT.
What To Expect From Tonight’s Storm
- Wind gusts up to 40 mph—enough to knock down small branches and toss unsecured outdoor items
- Pea-size hail—potential for minor hail damage to gardens, landscaping, and yes, your roof
- Heavy rainfall—risk of localized flooding; avoid driving through flooded roadways at all times
Locations impacted include Albemarle, Badin Lake, Plyler, Locust, Badin, Oakboro, Stanfield, Richfield, New London, and Fish Tales Marina. If you’re outdoors, seek shelter in a sturdy building right away.
Local Outdoor Events and Activities Tonight
If you or your family are participating in Albemarle’s Passport Outdoor Program (P.O.P.), note that tonight is the final evening of this event, which runs until July 31. Be sure to keep an eye on the sky and move activities indoors if storms approach. Likewise, if you’re enjoying outdoor recreation at Morrow Mountain State Park, it’s best to pause hiking or water activities and find safe shelter as storms roll in.
How Storms Like This Can Impact Your Roof
Even a quick thunderstorm with winds of 40 mph and pea-sized hail can cause problems for your roof, especially if it’s older or already has minor damage. Curious what to look for after a storm like this?
- Missing or lifted shingles—wind can loosen or completely remove shingles, exposing the underlayment
- Dented or dimpled shingles—small hail may cause subtle but significant bruising to asphalt shingles
- Clogged or damaged gutters—branch debris and hail can prevent proper water runoff
- Leaks in the attic or ceiling stains—signs water is getting in where it shouldn’t
