Date: June 23, 2025
The National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory for Concord, North Carolina, effective from June 23 at 1:11 PM EDT until June 25 at 8:00 PM EDT. Extreme heat is forecasted, with heat index values expected to reach up to 107°F. This advisory covers much of central North Carolina, including our community here in Concord.
What Does This Mean for Concord Residents?
High temperatures and humidity can lead to dangerous heat illnesses if precautions aren’t taken. This type of heat also puts a strain on local infrastructure, including roads, vehicles, public transportation, and—most importantly—your home’s roof and attic ventilation systems. Prolonged heat can expose vulnerabilities in older roofs, causing shingles to curl, crack, or loosen. In severe cases, this can lead to leaks, increased attic temperatures, and reduced energy efficiency inside your home.
Impacts on Local Outdoor Events
If you’re planning to attend an outdoor event during this advisory, be sure to take extra safety steps. The Queen Charlotte Fair is running daily at the Route 29 Pavilion through July 5, offering rides, games, and food—perfect summer fun, but remember: the heat will be at its peak during fair hours. Drink plenty of fluids, wear light clothing, and take breaks in the shade.
Preventative Measures to Minimize Roof Damage During Extreme Heat
Is your home ready for a heatwave? Prolonged heat can accelerate wear and tear on your roof. Here’s what you can do today to help prevent costly repairs down the line:
- Inspect Attic Ventilation: Good airflow in your attic keeps your roof’s temperature in check, reducing heat stress on shingles and underlayment.
- Look for Loose or Damaged Shingles: High heat can make shingles brittle or cause them to warp. Catching these signs early can prevent water damage when the next storm rolls through.
- Clear Gutters and Downspouts: Debris can trap heat and moisture, further damaging your roofing materials.
- Schedule a Professional Inspection: Not sure if your roof is up to the challenge? We offer free inspections to help you spot problems before they become emergencies.
General Safety Tips During the Heat Advisory
- Limit outdoor activities to early morning or evening when possible.
- Stay hydrated—bring water with you to the Queen Charlotte Fair or other events.
- Check on family, neighbors, and pets regularly.
- Know the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. If you notice symptoms like dizziness, nausea, rapid pulse, or confusion, seek shade and medical attention immediately.
