Date: July 19, 2025

Heads up, Concord residents! The National Weather Service (NWS) in Raleigh has issued a Heat Advisory for our area. This advisory was released at 2:00PM EDT on July 19 and remains in effect until 8:00PM tonight. Another Heat Advisory is set from 11:00AM to 8:00PM on Sunday. High heat index values—up to 107°F today and up to 109°F tomorrow—are expected across the southern and eastern Piedmont, including Concord and all of Cabarrus County.

Why Should You Be Concerned?

Extreme heat doesn’t just affect our comfort. It can put a real strain on your home, local infrastructure, and especially your roof. Prolonged sun exposure and heat can cause roofing materials to expand and contract, leading to warping, cracking, or even premature aging of shingles and flat roofs. If you’ve been putting off a roof check, this kind of weather is a reminder of why regular inspections matter.

Local Outdoor Events During the Heat Advisory

  • Summer Shootout at Charlotte Motor Speedway (July 15–29): If you plan on attending this high-energy racing event in Concord, be sure to stay hydrated, seek shade during breaks, and know where first aid stations are located.
  • TequilaVillie at Route 29 Pavilion (July 19): Outdoor concerts are a summer staple, but with this advisory, it’s wise to wear a hat, carry water, and take cooling breaks often.

These events are fantastic, but remember, high heat can quickly turn dangerous—especially for children, older adults, and anyone spending prolonged time outdoors.

Preventative Measures for Your Roof During Extreme Heat

Curious how this heat wave can affect your roof? Here are some simple steps to help minimize damage and extend your roof’s lifespan during heat advisories:

  • Inspect for loose or damaged shingles: Hot weather can make existing issues worse. Catching them early can save you from bigger problems down the line.
  • Check attic ventilation: Proper airflow helps reduce heat buildup under your roof, lowering energy costs and reducing material stress.
  • Look for signs of warping or blistering: If you see any spots on your roof that don’t look quite right, it’s time for a professional inspection.
  • Trim overhanging branches: This can provide extra shade and prevent debris from falling onto a stressed roof.

Take Heat Illness Seriously

The NWS urges everyone to drink plenty of fluids, stay in air-conditioned spaces, and avoid strenuous activity during peak hours. If you’re working or relaxing outdoors, wear loose, light clothing and keep an eye out for signs of heat exhaustion or heat stroke. Move anyone showing symptoms to a cool, shaded location and call 911 in severe cases.
